Ratified December 1791 The First Amendment of the Bill of Rights enforces the separation of church and state as the government cannot support a law that favors one religion over another. The amendment also protects the right of free speech, the ability to assemble, and the right to petition, to individuals who were considered to be citizens of the United States as the nation had recently formed.
