A study of genetic populations in India suggests the Indian caste system, a traditional method of social organization into a hierarchy of hereditary groups, has been prevalent in the South Asian society for about 2000 years.

-Social classes: Nobles served many functions in support of the ruler. Some were military leaders, while others managed public works, collected taxes and enforced laws. Scribes, painters, and sculptors were also highly respected. Merchants formed a middle class in society but the wealthiest were certainly nobles. The majority of Mayans were farmers.
