Kaolin (also known as china clay) is a fine white clay named after it's place of origin, Kao-Ling (Gaoling "high-ridge") in China. It's essential when making clay and widely used in the ceramics industry. It's what we're named after. This material from the earth that brings us together - no hierarchy, just mud.  This photo is a pile of reclaim; clay which is being recycled to be used again. It's very sloppy and sticky at this stage, but soon it will be wedged (a way of kneading) ready to use.
