Words contain or begin with continuant consonants (sounds that can be indefinitely extended) 🗣 These are: f, l, m, n, r, s, v and z. Other consonants (nasal stops or non-continuants🚫) can be a little more tricky for emergent readers to blend as they have an obstruction of the airway which means they essentially ‘stop’ as they’re making the sound 👄 Try it out yourself! This strategy will help✨ Drop the word ⚠️ BLEND ⚠️ below ⬇️ for a link to my “Scooping Mats” AND teaching slides seen ⬆️ Can your child read each of these sounds /c/a/t but can’t blend them together? And might say random words instead- car, cake, house? 😬 Never fear! Successive blending is here! This has been a game changer in my classroom! Some readers need more support with short term memory. These readers can read /c/a/t but when blending the phonemes together they may say “car” or “catch” or another similar word. If this happens take a step back and do this: 1. Read each sound adding on one letter at a time 2. Scoop the first and second sound together, then add the final sound 3. Use blending mat Teaching Letter Blends, Teach Blending Sounds, Blending Strategies Kindergarten, Blending 2 Letter Sounds, Blending Sounds Activities Preschool, 2 Letter Blending Words, Blending Reading Activities, Letter Blending Activities, Teaching Blends Kindergarten
