about

For this trans person (genderqueer / nonbinary), I, like so many others have to evaluate most places I go for physical threats. I currently live in the “sanctuary city” of Chicago, Illinois, and I still rely on situational awareness. Most of the time everything’s fine. And sometimes, it’s Time to Leave.

Also, I've been with partners whose company demanded my situational awareness of their moods, and I lived those days walking on eggshells. Sometimes, it was time to leave the room, and eventually it was simply Time to Leave.

I’ve been in diners, nightclubs, churches, waiting rooms, on the bus, on the train, or at the grocery store when all the signs of the surroundings told me that it was time to leave - time to drop what I came for, and carefully make my way to the exit. And I’ve had it easy.

To commemorate the historic inauguration of the 47th President of the USA, this song channels all of this – when the mood in the room turns, when strangers' eyes have the glint of a knife - when hostility starts cracking its knuckles. At that time, I’ll defend myself and my loved ones as best I can, provide counsel and support to my community as best I can, and if it comes to it – I’m fixing to know when it’s Time to Leave.

lyrics

LYRICS:

This Party’s Almost Over / Time to Split the Scene
This Party’s Almost Over / Need an Exit Strategy
This Party’s Almost Over / Don’t you think we should Leave?
Time to Leave, Time…

Club Nights Out used to be fun
But Loaded Dudes go off like Loaded Guns
They’re Killing the Lights – does nobody care?
Everyone / tells me that / life ain’t always fair…

That charming smile / was just a false face
Liars always need someone to blame.
Warning bells ring all night and all day
Why should I / fight and die / nothing remains to save

This Party’s Nearly Over / Time to Split the Scene
This Party’s Nearly Over / Need an Exit Strategy
This Party’s Nearly Over – Don’t you think it’s ‘bout time to leave?
Time to Leave, Time…

Don’t want to write my own epitaph
No-one wants to be second class
Was live-and-let-live too much to ask?
You could have loved me, but you blew the chance.

This Party’s Clearly Over / Time to Split the Scene
This Party’s Clearly Over / Need an Exit Strategy
This Party’s Clearly Over / Baby, it’s killing me
Time to Leave, Time to Leave
