What is a samurai without his sword? What is a samurai who cannot even use a sword? Steel of the Celestial Shadows is a manga that follows our protagonist as he journeys through a world unfamiliar to his own, attempting to save the woman he loves. He is a samurai who, for reasons revealed in the story, is unable to wield a sword. Despite what might seem like a fatal flaw, he is determined to go far and beyond for love. Ultimately, this is a love story, full of moments that will make you feel and wonder deeply, but that capture the human essence.

people hear the word “samurai,” they may think of violence or a warrior and their katana but this manga goes beyond that. It really isn't the generic idea of what a samurai does. it explores what makes a samurai. As you go in, go beyond the surface. That’s where its creativity shines.
The art style in this manga is very good. There are moments where it can be a little comical, during light hearted scenes, and more detailed and intricate, at times, with realism that personifies these characters. The mangaka does an excellent job capturing internal shifts, not just in scenes, but within the characters themselves. She conveys mood, feelings, emotions, and even unspoken thoughts with great care. Reading this manga requires looking beyond the surface and delving into the complexities that exist among its characters. Not everything is straightforward. If you're familiar with the mangaka’s previous work (Kasane), you’ll know she doesn’t shy away from the uncomfortable. She digs deep into the human experience, and that’s exactly what she does here. The characters are complex and distinct. They stand on their own, but also feel cohesive when put together. This applies even to the antagonists. It doesn't feel like someone has to be the bad guy just for the sake of having a bad guy. They add a complexity that may make you question your own morals.
The worldbuilding is commendable. Set in 19th-century Japan, the manga clearly involved extensive research. Through the language used and customs to the character names and traditional practices and the environment, it is captured well. Even the character designs reflect the era. All of this makes reading the manga feel like a full experience. It’s not a history lesson, but it honors history in a way that’s both authentic and refreshing. The inclusion of cultural details and period-specific elements adds a richness that just immerses the reader further. The manga does include some heavy themes like social inequality, morality, love, and the complexity that comes with humans, these are woven throughout the narrative. We explore this world through the eyes of the protagonist, who, like us, is learning and discovering as he goes. Despite everything he faces, you can’t help but root for him. It’s a page-turner - intriguing and exciting. The chaos that unfolds brings a rush, and being alongside these characters on their journey is a beautiful experience but not an easy one. Laughs will be had, tears may be shed but that's one element of a good story.
While the manga doesn’t shy away from violence or heavy themes, it never feels excessive or confusing. The pacing is good, the characters are distinct, and the story is one hell of a ride. You’ll want to buckle your seatbelt, because it will keep you on the edge of it. The incorporation of supernatural elements fits well, not only because of how they’re presented, but also because they align with the era’s beliefs, traditions, and practices. I think how they are introduced and used is clever.
