Synopsis

Rakugo, a traditional form of storytelling, takes years for any apprentice to master and ascend to the top rank of shinuchi. Ever since she could remember, Akane Ousaki has been mesmerized by her father Tooru's rakugo performances. Peeking in behind a sliding door, she would spend hours watching and mimicking his work.

For Tooru, the only thing separating him from that coveted rank is a promotion test in front of an audience and a senior rakugo master, Issho Arakawa. Despite his passionate performance, Tooru finds himself expelled from the rakugo school following the exam. This makes him give up on rakugo entirely and settle for a regular job, breaking his daughter's heart.

Filled with grief and anger, Akane now seeks vengeance on the man who refuses to see the genius behind her father's rakugo style. She begs Tooru's former rakugo master, Shiguma Arakawa, to take her under his wing. But Shiguma feels unworthy of taking on another pupil after what happened to her father six years prior. In order to see if she has what it takes to enter the rakugo world, Shiguma urges Akane to test her resolve by performing in front of an audience.

Akane-banashi has been published digitally as an English simulpub through MANGA Plus. The volumes have been published by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint since August 8, 2023.

The manga ranked third in the Print Manga category at the eighth Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Awards in 2022.

Akane-Banashi follow the path of Akane Osaki to become a Shin'uchi a master of Rakugo, a cultural art based in comedy acts performed just by talking, limited movement and gesture, using stories from edo period.

Story 8 (30%)
Akane Banashi follow the step of a common shonen manga, there is rivals, friends, a main antagonist, "power" scale, tournaments etc. but with an excellent execution. The path of Akane to archive her goals is well calculated until now, arc by arc just raise the bar, how she grow-up, whats she learn, who she knows, the connection she build, etc. the comedy stories could be not really funny to ...

- oshi no ko

why? because it helps me organize my thoughts.

food wars is a cooking series, but it feels like a sports/shonen manga, and it forces the reader to become a foodie, even if they dont cook.
akane-banashi does something similar: it pulls a clueless reader into the deep but charming world of rakugo (solo storytelling) in a way that turns you into a fan, no pun intended 🪭. it also has those same flavors of sports/shonen manga i mentioned above.

on the good side: creative set up, and a structurally a well written and planned story. the designs are cute and there's a good deal of realism. akane is your typical shounen protagonist: energetic, passionate, and in a constant state of learning.

on the bad side: initially, it was super cool to learn about rokugo, but after a while it just gets... repetitive. maybe someone who is more familiar and interested in a "sports manga" type of format would be more interested in this series. akane banashi isn't a manga i stopped reading because of some final straw or even bad writing. it just kind ...
