Synopsis

Living in the slums of a wealthy town, Rudo and his foster father Regto try to coexist with the rest of the town's residents, but Rudo despises the wastefulness of the upper class. Ignoring the warnings from those around him, Rudo regularly rummages through the town's garbage in search of anything useful or valuable to save from the "Abyss"—a massive hole where anything considered trash is dumped, including people. Rudo's biological father was one such person, having been thrown into the Abyss after he was accused of murder.

One day, after running into a mysterious figure on the way home, Rudo returns to find Regto's dying body on the floor. He is immediately found at the scene by the authorities and is charged with murder. No one believes his claims of innocence, and he is thrown into the Abyss. Instead of dying, however, he finds himself in a strange, foul-smelling place surrounded by monsters made out of trash.

When Rudo is attacked by said monsters, he is saved by a man named Enjin, who reveals himself to be a "Cleaner"—someone who uses special weapons called Vital Instruments to combat these creatures. In order to get his revenge on the one who killed Regto, Rudo reluctantly becomes a Cleaner to fight his way back up and out of the Abyss.

Gachiakuta was nominated for the 47th and 48th Kodansha Manga Awards in the Shounen category in 2023 and 2024.

The series has been simulpub digitally in English through K Manga. The volumes have been published by Kodansha USA since January 16, 2024. It has also been released in German by Altraverse since April 17, 2023; and in Italian by Edizioni Star Comics since October 4, 2023.

What is beautiful? What is ugly? What is valuable? What is nothing? What is love? What is war? What is life? And what is death?

All of those questions immediately blew me to the ground the moment I read the synopsis... of the anime. Especially considering current events, it's just funny to me how all of these questions line up.

I mean, after all, it can't just be a coincidence that an idiot like me, who nearly failed high-school english, has seized the cool. No matter how deeper I look into things, they just... keep... BLURRING...

- A Pleasant Explosion of Creativity and Style -

I began reading Gachiakuta in early 2023, not expecting much. But as it sits on the top of my current manga list, I am grateful to have the pleasure of reading it.

Gachiakuta's world mirrors our own, and in that sense, the story explores many themes, with some being more lighthearted and some being rooted in a darker place. Those are in place to bring the reader down to Earth, to remind us that no matter how bad your life may be, there's always something worse going on that you may not know about.

For all it's looks, Gachiakuta is surprisingly average, and together with mangas like Wind Breaker, are probably the biggest offenders of what I dubbed "Pinterest Shounen", the most recent crutch of the biggest shounen publishers, featuring all of the style and none of the story.

So, you are telling me that this overconfident kid, who's hardworking but always gets the short end of the stick, will have to work hard to protect what he loves, and maybe get revenge if he's really edgy? Woah, easy there Naruto, you might get dirt in your trendy overalls if you keep that up.
