Synopsis

"I was meant to play baseball!" Jirou Ayasegawa has a natural gift for sports, but life can be lonely at the top. He's crushed other players' dreams. Some have even given up their sport altogether because of him. Eventually, he encounters "The Bambies," a low-level, local kids' baseball team that plays purely for fun. Jiro signs up, thinking that he's finally found an easy-going team to enjoy baseball with, until things take a sudden turn...

Diamond no Kouzai might seem like it's about the best pitcher in the world, but it's really a manga about losing, about the losers, about feeling hopeless and jealous. It digs deep into that side of sports that most manga usually avoid.

In Cross Game, when Kou throws a perfect game, we see the people who lost. They're upset, sure, but they get it. Winning and losing is just part of sports. Even if they're jealous or angry, they don't let it eat them up, and the ones who do are usually shown as the bad guys. Diamond no Kouzai flips that around.

I started reading The days of diamond after its release on manga plus app.
The story is good with an original approach of talent and what it can cause on others and on oneself, particularly in the extrem competitive field that is sport. The point is that the main character is kind and all he really wants is to have fun, and also that the others around him enjoy themselves. Unlike the majority of gifted characters in sport manga, he doesn't enjoy crushing his opponents and victory doesn't really matter to him. He has a hard time understanding others and no one understands him.

I really like stories about gifted athletes and their struggles, so given that's the main theme of this manga I thought I'd give it a chance. And don't get me wrong, it is good in the sense that the story is engaging and the main character really sets himself apart from other such characters in this trope. However, as it's being told from the perspective of an 11 year old, it's truly confusing and hard to follow most of the time.
