Our Members of the Hyper Go Home Club!
Naoki Satou or Chokki: If you would give me 3 words to describe Chokki, I would describe her as Eccentric, imaginative, and very aloof. She's very forgetful of conversations she had before, but perceptive and caring about details like Shun's knee injury, and she would feel responsible for her act if she’d gone too far and stopped being playful for Shun’s sake. Even if she's very considerate, her denseness sometimes makes her the weird one. The obvious example of her being dense is when she was bundling up rocks and sticks in the school premises.
...
She's not as considerate with her image. It makes it hard what's really on her mind at times. Even so, that's the romance of her personality that I adore.
Shun Satou: An upfront and straightforward guy about his feelings who got dragged into Chokki’s antics of her hyper go home club. As time passed by, as he got more intrigued by her personality and wanting to know her better, he started playing along and enjoyed his time with her which ended up budding feelings for her. He’s also passionate about soccer but after his injury it led him to retire his career and dream.
Yura: Only with the short interaction since she's only in 2 chapters so far. She's an outgoing gyaru that was a member of a club for 1 day and decided to leave seeing the romance between the two. She intends to be the wing-woman for Chokki to help with the romance.
Introduction
Does the thought of waking up early going to school excite you? Of course not! Going home is more exciting than staring at lectures all day! Sitting on your desk, eager for the clock to strike three, heading home with your friends while going on detours, silly adventures, and conversations along the way. It's a charming manga about having fun on the way home.
.
This manga reminded me of when I was in middle school. While I find most days boring and mundane, there were days where I'd think to myself “I want to go off my usual path.” I would explore alleyways, buy street food along the way, or play around with what the environment offers.
Sometimes you can find a good view of the city on your way home. Maybe you've discovered a restaurant that you can regularly visit. Or maybe one day you've stumbled upon a public library and decided "I'll take my breaks from school here."
It's a breath of fresh air from the boring struggles of everyday life. To have that something to look forward to after school has its own tales and childish charm. Finding sticks and using it as a sword. A random glove on the sidewalk, arranging it into a middle finger. I remember how much my friends and I were laughing our asses off when people passed by.
It was these memories in middle/highschool that this manga made me reminisce, which made me appreciate the “romance” of it.
The Romance Of It
Naoki describes these feelings as "Romance" or from my interpretation from the manga. It's a certain charm of adventure or imaginative ways of doing things while on the way home. She liked the idea of unconventional ways of communicating like trying outdated technology and methods. For example, she refused to watch the TV for the weather forecasts. Instead she makes her own predictions, which ends with them needing to rush to the nearest shelter all wet from the rain.
Naoki also calls the items used in romance as "Weapons". Like riding a bicycle, building a gingerbread house, or playing with sticks.
In trying to experience different things that were convenient in the past —The convenient ways of the modern present, the modern past, and the ancient past. She wants to experience things like:
"What is the most convenient store item I could get with 200 yen($4)?"
"What did they do in the 80s whenever they messaged their friends for an outing? A Pager? How about the ancient past? Don't they use Carrier Pigeons?”
There are also just mundane questions like "What is the most optimal position inside an umbrella with two people?"
Now, you would ask why she wants to experience these unconventional or mundane events? From her perspective it's simple, it's fun for her to discover the “romance” of it.
Let's Go Home!
The act of going home gave me the opportunity to tell interesting stories either about myself or with friends. Giving off this nostalgic or 2nd hand embarrassment vibe that it's hard to remove that core memory, no matter how much you want to forget.
When I was around 11-12, I had these 2 wheeled skates Where you do wheelies with your feet.
So one day my classes were over and I went home with my friends from band class. On the way home, I was trying to show off a cool skating trick to my friends. From a stroke of luck, I tripped on a road crack and fell. While I was on the ground getting back up on my feet. My friends are laughing in the background, getting to witness that moment created by mother nature. I was embarrassed throughout the entire walk home. I really wanted to run back home after that happened. Well, I guess there's a romance of tripping on skates with your friends all to see. That memory is engraved on cement, no matter how I want to forget it, but speaking of cement.
There's another story where I was with a friend on the way home, after getting our medical certificate for an upcoming sports festival. It was a sunny day walking back home until we suddenly stepped on something soft and wet. Looking at our shoes we both sank in concrete. It was quite the dilemma for my friend. Since he wore rubber shoes, the cotton easily welcomed the wet concrete into its fibers. Luckily for me I was wearing some formal shoes with rubber as its base. It was easy to clean once I got home. But for my friend, I was joking that his shoes would get dry before getting back home. Having to drag concrete shoes similar to Rock Lee’s training weights.
There is a certain romance and intrigue of stepping on wet concrete. Making a mark on the sidewalk is kind of romantic… I wonder if it's still there? I doubt it would be, but if we were to walk by and see that foot deep mark on the sidewalk. Maybe I do get the romance?
The Actual Romance Of It
This aspect of the series is paced pretty well. Even if it's not the main focus, the progression from random strangers going home one day, into being close friends, and up to the latest chapter where the romance starts to bloom feels natural.
Getting to that point of the romance starting to progress and I'll say this now but damn she looks adorable to see her dumbstruck and expressive compared to her usual blunt and innocent expressions.
The Romance of it Overall
The manga is charming and wholesome that I wholeheartedly recommend everyone to read. The cute moments and the nostalgic art style seemingly makes you feel like you're watching their past lives in highschool. It seemingly seeps through and touches your heart to recall and enjoy the romance of going home.
Score: 9/10
There's much more things I want to write about, but I think it doesn't fit well with the contents that I focused on in this review. So I'll leave it at that. Thanks for reading!
