Synopsis

The stage is the proud land of the north—Hokkaido. The year is 2010. Rou Shirakawa has just received the highest score in history at the All-Japan Junior Figure Skating Championships! But suddenly, he loses control and starts destroying the stage. He is quickly disqualified and banned from the skating world for life. Now nicknamed "the Rabid Prince," Rou ends up in Tamakomai, an ice hockey town in northern Japan. And on a hockey rink on a frozen lake, he meets the ruthless Genma brothers! Rou will soon learn of the famous Oino-kami high school and their quest to win an unprecedented 20th straight national hockey championship. And also the strong, yet beautiful battle sport—ice hockey! A pampered figure skater joins a hockey league full of delinquents: hilarity ensues.

As someone who doesn't care about hockey, this manga does a good job of making the training and techniques seem interesting with its amusing cast and how completely out of touch Rou is with the commoners. It's satisfying to watch him suck at hockey and learn how to become a better player. It's also satisfying to watch him skate circles around the others while throwing in some figure skating jumps and spins for no reason other than the fact that he can't help himself.

I was thinking about Golden Kamuy the other day. I really loved the manga. The plot, the great cast of characters, the history and the artwork! Everything was amazing and it made me wonder what Noda Satoru was up to, since I knew he was working on a new series. That's how I discovered Dogsred. A sports manga about hockey.

As a Canadian, I've grown up around hockey. While I've never been rich enough to actually play it, I've played road hockey and watched the NHL both on TV and at the arena. But a hockey manga? I didn't know if I wanted to read ...

This manga has the potential to do for ice hockey what Slam Dunk did for basketball and Haikyuu did for volleyball. It employs a familiar zero to hero arc but it executes it with the confidence of a supreme figure skater going into a triple axel. It contains humorous beats without dumbing down the relate-ability and humanity of the characters and employs a steady pace magnifying the world, the characters and the intricacies of the sport for those unfamiliar.
