Summer has been OK and I'm ready to move on to autumn on the 22nd of September. I just hope that North Carolina won't be getting another hurricane like Helene which pretty much ruined said friend's birthday last fall. Life has been treating me kindly more or less. I'm still waiting for my new oilstone.

Anime-wise, I'm only interested in whichever ones have the most interesting themes and I don't watch anything mass-produced. Why watch that much similar anime under different names exploring similar themes? I haven't any anime as of late that explored themes like duality and parallel lives, the building blocks of Madlax (re-watched 3 times). Quality over quantity and quality anime explore more different themes. If it weren't for Solty Rei (re-watched more times than all these dweebs combined on this site; I leave battle shounen and isekai to those dorks) and Silent Möbius (manga is better though and sex sells), then I wouldn't be having unconventional cyberpunk comics like Private Eye on my wishlist. Unconventional cyberpunk have more novelty than 80s stuff. I still love RoboCop 2 though and yes, I agree with my big half-Asian friend about your age saying that too much societal decay (corporate control and ugly neon lights) has compromised the novelty of commercial, more conventional cyberpunk.

While I do love space opera, Gundam (exploring the exact same themes and old timelines nowadays; creative bankruptcy) and Star Wars have also lost their novelty. So I rather have those others as previously mentioned on my wishlist instead.

Said tomboyish Sailor Mars fangirl exactly your age clearly loves Sailor Moon, but hates Inuyasha and Urusei Yatsura which she dropped decades ago. Definitely not her cup of tea from a themes standpoint and she also hasn't watched much anime years ago. Most anime nowadays are for kids which are completely clueless about the type of themes they have. Imagine a student saying he or she loves The End of EVA in a classroom, but the teacher mocks that kid for not knowing anything about it (that student has to respect the themes and story to know what it's about). That's exactly what I took notice on social media. That kid should have done his research before everyone in the classroom laughed at him thinking he's clueless about his favorite movie.

Another tomboy or my big Virgo friend that turned 40 four days ago also had trouble finding novelty in recent anime so she spent more time outdoors, like hiking and spending quality time with her dad in his homestead. I won't bother wasting my time with mass-produced anime or manga either. I'm also thinking about exploring Knights of Sidonia because I rarely see true sci-fi manga nowadays. Like I'm going to read the same manga as a teenager. AFAIK, teenagers don't read unconventional graphic novels.

So yes, who cares about modern or cookie-cutter anime anyway? Novelty across different media is what really counts.

This year's summer while trying to amuse me gave me the flu.

I heard a great deal about Hollow Knight: Silksong and critics can butt out if they don't like its difficulty. Gotta rely on modders to undo mistakes in games nowadays. Video games were originally programmed to challenge people. Since the Atari days, what century are those critics from?

I've been playing Suikoden 2 for the first time, by the way. I prefer exploring by sea like in Suikoden 4 and Tactics though. It's been decades since I last played Suikoden Tactics or the prequel to S4.

Good thing there's a Suikoden 2 anime on its way because conventional anime don't explore class warfare. How come indie comics like explore that theme more often overall? The 2013 comic Lazarus sure did.

Having said that, I hope that you're having great summer.

I haven't read Black Science yet, but I'm really liking Copperhead (a space western; exciting at issue 6) and Lazarus (not to be confused with that anime which explores entirely different themes than class warfare, vigilantism and urban dystopia). My awesome friend from North Carolina that learned German passionately would definitely read Black Science, Paper Girls, Descender, Saga and other space opera indie comics some time. Those space operas should be enough for me to contain my anticipation for future Macross movies. More unconventional space opera anime would be great for grownups.

Beast Wars may seem like a kids show, but it explores very different themes than most cartoons. It gets really interesting after episode 14. Can't believe I missed it on Kids WB back in 1996. Consequences of war isn't a theme that kids shows nowadays can cosign with like indie comics, video games or very mature Japanese media.

Yes! That's based on 1998 Ghost in the Shell. The closest adaptation to that Masamune Shirow manga in artstyle and I used to play it back in 6th grade.

Other than that, I've been exploring Arc The Lad 3, an underrated gem from 1999. Same year my beloved Grandia got a PS1 port. Anyway! Arc The Lad is an underrated franchise with very original themes and powerful narrative.

I have tried to play Grand Knights History in Japanese, but its narrative just wasn't powerful enough. Therefore it doesn't hold the candle to Arc The Lad.

Other than that, I got a tomboyish friend exactly your age. That same friend of mine or a Sailor Mars fangirl is currently hanging out with her lover.

Yes milady! Smart is the new sexy. She also loves EVA and Tenchi Muyo. She also loves space opera.

With that said, I look forward to reading Black Science and space western indie comics.

You know, I still haven't bothered to update any of it in years. Will I put in the effort this year? Probably not.

Welcome back Aoi-san! So how are you doing so far and post-holidays?

With Silent Möbius (it's sequel included), Wild Arms 2 and Sakura Wars 1-4 around, I've decided to study Japanese since last June.

Now I got a Terabox full of screenshots that I took from Nihongodera. That and Word Reference have been really helpful online tools. I also got the old Instant Japanese book uploaded to Terabox so it'll stick with me forever too.

Yes, the old book that taught me basic and general Japanese on behalf of a real sensei. That is, Boyé Lafayette de Mente or Boyé-sensei. May he RIP and I hope that his daughter has had plenty of joyful trips in Japan.

A friend of mine exactly your age is learning German. Could be useful for reading this Lindbergh manga. I might get into that after Silent Möbius QD.

Many Japanese prefer to use hiragana, but kanji helps reduce excess writing for me. Sometimes Chinese characters are more memorable than heavy kanas.

Overall, it's kind of an easy language to learn and I hope to master it by April.

With that said, I hope that you'll have an awesome Year of the Dragon.

2023 or Year of the Rabbit is okay. Therefore, I'm doing rather well this year.

I was re-watching Ghost in the Shell: 2nd Gig and Madlax recently (I love Houko Kuwashima).

As for future Macross movies, I expect the new movies to perform really well. CGI is definitely the future and I hope that the special effects will be wicked like Blue Submarine no. 6. Definitely one of the most original CG anime that I grew up with.
Kurt_Irving Apr 25, 2023 10:06 PM
Hello again miss! So what do you think of Harmony Gold and Big West coming to terms about bringing future Macross movies across the globe?

I found out about that via Den of Geek.
Soulsfear Apr 24, 2023 6:07 AM
You're welcome..it's been decent enough in this decade so far.
