Well, look at me. Blogging on a Tuesday:) If you are just dropping in, I typically post on Mondays, Wednedays and Fridays. But, for December, I am having a bit of fun and posting Monday through Friday. Go me:) I started the day with the second cup of holiday coffee from my advent calendar. This morning it was Chocolate Coconut. To be honest, I was expecting the liquid equivalent of a Mounds bar. Which may or may not have been a great idea at the six o’clock hour. It was not, however, a candy bar in a coffee mug. But it was still quite tasty. I’m not sure every surprise will include chocolate but, for now, we are on a roll. And I am not complaining.
Along with my coffee, I started two different Advent Devotionals. I started two with the hope of finding one that I really enjoy and is “the right one” for this year. Neither one were great. I was disappointed. If you are using an advent devotional this year, and you are (well, two days in) enjoying it, please let me know. I don’t exactly have time to order something but I can look on The Bible app or in the Kindle library. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Speaking of recommendations, I would love to know what your favorite Christmas movie is?? Do you have one that you just “have to” watch every year? Or perhaps you just have great memories of watching a certain movie over the years. That would probably better describe my favorite movie. Some of you (with amazing memories) will already know my favorite movie during this season. I’ve mentioned more than a few times. It has not changed…..
ELF! I’m not sure if it is more the movie, itself, or simply the great memories of watching that movie in the past that just makes my heart smile! And makes me laugh. I love it. Actually, I have not seen it in years. (Huge sigh!) It is not a favorite of my whole family and, truthfully, it probably is only my favorite. And I really do not watch movies by myself. I should. I could. But given that chunk of time to myself, I usually choose something over than a movie. If we watch a Christmas movie, as a family, it will very often be Home Alone. That would definitely be my husband’s favorite (if he isn’t watching a Hallmark one! Tis true.) He finds the slapstick comedy in Home Alone too funny. The rest of us just find him too funny while he is laughing so hard!!
I don’t want these “extra” posts to be too long but let me share a favorite memory. Related to a Christmas movie. Or, more specifically, to Elf. When my brother was living here, in the city, we would do a Christmas event each year as our gift to each other. The year we saw Elf, the Musical was, by far, the most amazing! We saw it at the Kennedy Center and it was such a fantastic evening in every way. We had great seats. Just close enough to the stage to be fully engaged (but not too close). We laughed. We cheered. We were sad when it ended. And ever since that performance, Elf has been my favorite:) Good memories make it “my favorite Christmas movie.” I love the special Christmas memories with my brother. Goodness but he is far away in California!!
Enough with the sentimentality. I’m glad you stopped by today and I hope you will bring your coffee and join me again tomorrow as well!
I love Elf. When my son was little he insisted on watching it many times, even in July. I remember he would take his stuffed animals and have them talk to each other and would have one say to the other, “Call me elf one more time!” Now he has become bored with the movie and complains because we’ve seen it so many times but I love watching it every year in December. It’s so funny and well done. Oooh, I did hear about the musical and glad to you enjoyed it and have those memories with your brother. I believe it’s the memories that always makes the Christmas season extra special.
I’m so glad someone else thinks Elf is just so cute – and worth watching multiple times!!:)
From the old movies, I like The Bishop’s Wife. From the ‘modern’ era, I do like Home Alone. It still makes me laugh. Interesting coffee from your advent box, Jennifer.
The Bishop’s Wife?? I have never even heard of this one. I will have to look into it! Thanks!
Hands down, my favorite movie came out last year. It replaced all others. You must check it out. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. I loved the book which I bought way back in the 1980’s and the sticker on the back has that of a local book store that I remember fondly . Long gone due to the bigger chain stores. I am always the movie can’t be as good as the book, but the movie is fabulous.
Sandy, this is a new one to me. But you really make me want to check it out. Thanks so much for a new recommendation!!
I love that you are blogging Monday through Friday this month, Jennifer! I am reading The Dawn of Redeeming Grace by Sinclair Ferguson that is an Advent devotional. I’m not sure what you are looking for, but I find this book very enriching. This is my second or third year of using it.
My favorite Christmas movie is It’s a Wonderful Life! Hands down! But the memories you have of seeing a live performance of Elf with your brother at the Kennedy Center would definitely be reason for it being your favorite movie.
Thanks Dianna – I have downloaded Sinclair Ferguson’s devotional and look forward to reading and catching up a couple of days this evening! I appreciate your sharing!!
I think ‘ A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens is a favourite story for me and there have been some good film versions over the years. Some better than other.
I feel really bad that I need to confess never having seen ‘Elf’ before. I will try to look out for it sometime.
It took a little while for Elf to grow on me as I often find Will Farrel’s characters to be a bit too much but after having watched it a couple times with my boys I did find myself falling more and more in love with it. For YEARS we watched it every single Thanksgiving night in front of our fireplace while eating our dessert; it was sort of our unofficial goodbye Thanksgiving/hello Christmas ritual. Just a year or two ago they all started asking if we could watch something else and of course I said sure but I do miss that tradition and still watch it at some point during December on my own… along with all my other holiday favorite movies– Love Actually, While You Were Sleeping, The Holiday, Christmas with the Cranks, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Miracle on 34th street… and I’m sure there are a few others I’m forgetting.
