how do people like keep their site as is for so long without making drastic and often regretted changes to the entire thing every 2 months its alien to me

Speaking only for myself, I try to focus on content over presentation. For as long as you have a framework in presenting your content, you can go for a very long time before any significant visual change is needed.

I second what @asterion said. Yes, it's very important to understand that design is only like a first impression and everything else depends on your content. If you revamp again, try to accomodate changes that would reduce friction to uploading content.
