PARTY ON DUDES, IT'S ABE'S BIRTHDAY

As we celebrate our greatest President's birthday today, let's remember one of his most excellent speeches. The one from 1988 at San Dimas High School.

"Four score and seven minutes ago we, your forefathers were brought forth upon a most excellent adventure conceived by our new friends, Bill and Ted. These two great gentleman are dedicated to a proposition which was true in my time, just as it's true today. Be excellent to each other...and party on dudes!"

BLUE MOON PENCIL TABLET

FLEA MARKET FRIDAYS #81

It has been awhile since I've been snooping in any flea markets or antique stores. Today, I finally had a chance to get out there.  I found some cool stuff, but probably the most unique item is this very cool Blue Moon Pencil Tablet. I love the Man in the Moon graphics! He looks like he could star in a George Melies silent film. My guess this tablet is from the 1920s.

Here's looking at you! For fun, I made a Man in the Moon gif to go along with today's post.

GIF GIVING: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK THE ILLUSTRATED EDITION

Another one of my beloved books from childhood, The Empire Strikes Back The Illustrated Edition.  Not sure why Ballantine only produced this one and not the other two movies in the trilogy.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed the book cover gifs.  I'm not an experienced gif maker, but it was fun adding a little motion to these classic McQuarrie covers.  May the Gif be with you!

GIF GIVING: SPLINTER OF THE MIND'S EYE

You know what I would like to see?  An animated movie of the Splinter of the Mind's Eye in the style of a Ralph McQuarrie painting.  James Earl Jones, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels could easily reprise their famous roles as voice actors.  Can you imagine?  It would be the greatest Star Wars project since the original trilogy!

Later today, I'll post my last Ralph McQuarrie animated Star Wars cover with The Empire Strikes Back The Illustrated Edition.

GIF GIVING: RALPH MCQUARRIE'S STAR WARS PAPERBACK

I've been looking at a lot of Ralph McQuarrie artwork since his passing and one of my favorites is his cover for the first edition paperback.  This novelization was ghostwritten by Alan Dean Foster and released many months before the film.  All the later printings changed to the more familiar gold cover with art by John Berkey.

I thought it might be fun to add some motion to McQuarrie's classic cover and so I created this gif.  (You might need to let it cycle through once or twice before it gets to normal speed.)

Visit Rebelscum.com for their excellent article on the history of the Star Wars novelization.

Next up will be Splinter of the Mind's Eye.

BLASTING OFF WITH REDIPLETE PEDIATRIC SYRUP

FLEA MARKET FRIDAYS #53

1... 2... 3... blast off! Really, the hat on my head blasted off when I saw this box with the snazzy space graphics for sale at a flea market last week.

It’s always exciting when you sneak up on something you’ve never seen before and luckily for this item, the price was right.

My guess this Rediplete Pediatric Syrup box made by Merck Sharp & Dohme is from the late 1960's to early 1970's and it probably once held a bottle - now missing. I wonder what the bottle looked like? Maybe it was figural like Dan’s spaceman vitamin bottle or my builder man vitamin bottle.

The neato thing about this box, are the sides, ‘cause they turn into stretch pictures. You know, like the ones at the Haunted Mansion, just not as complicated and without the mayhem.

Let’s take a look at ‘em in action -

When I opened the box, I was shocked to find some sort of weird medicine inside.

Turns out these multicolored capsules are really from the novelty world with a tiny steel ball bearing inside. These mystery jumping beans, not to be confused with the Mexican variety, must have inspired the Mighty Beanz. I’m thankful for these little guys, because they helped save this box. Most vintage packaging is saved because someone used it for storage. That’s why you see tons of old coffee cans on the market, because everyone needed a container for their nails, screws and a cremated family pet or two.

Houston, the Rediplete has landed!
