Homonyms #1: Monochrome

In linguistics, Wikipedia tells us, homonyms are words which are either homographs — words that mean different things but have the same spelling — or homophones — words that mean different things but have the same pronunciation.

For the purposes of this blog, homonyms are different songs with the same title, and a shabby excuse for a new occasional series to keep this shambles ticking over.

I was reminded by Strangeways' excellent recent ICA post at The New Vinyl Villain of The Sundays' Monochrome, which in turn brought to mind the more recent Wedding Present track of the same name. So here they both are.

Which most floats your boat? Runaround... now!

  1. I had no idea there was a word for 'different songs with the same title'. There are hundreds of examples out there......a series that could.......

......Run. New Order, Snow Patrol, Spiritualised gives you three homonyms.

How about four? One Love - Bob Marley and The Wailers, Massive Attack, Nas, The Stone Roses.

Superman. I know of at least five homonyms - Blur, Cinerama, Eminem, Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, R.E.M.

Girlfriend. 'Allo Darlin', The Bathers, Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, Pebbles (later covered by The Beautiful South), Semisonic, Wet Leg. Six....and I'm sure there are many others!

And maybe the most of all......Angel.

I've 11 songs with this title on vinyl or CD and another three that I've 'acquired' over the years and have digital copies of the hard drive. The most obvious and well-known ones being Belly, Everything But The Girl, Happy Mondays, Massive Attack and The Style Council.
