great hair!

$80
7x5"original watercolour painting includes 8x10"mat

Great Hair! I used a two colour palette, a warm and and cool, to explore the many beautiful tones in this model's skin. Very happy with her! Check out the pics below of the original drawing. Cheers. : )

Lines!!

This portrait sketching exercise is about drawing fast, using as few lines as possible (I tried to stick to 20...) and using both the point and side of the pencil. I loved this process. I wish I did them on artist quality paper. They are on newsprint and I have yet to learn the lesson, always use good paper! ; )

The dynamic shapes that the human figure can make, especially when you aim for design, are always a unique pleasure.

#OneWeek100People2019 Challenge

The challenge started today! So, off I went to life drawing class with pencil in hand.
I always try to capture one good little pencil portrait for my sketchbook.
Below are some gesture drawings. I added the artists... (I have to get to 100 somehow!)

The challenge was started by Marc Taro Holmes, a wonderful fellow urban sketcher and awesome artist. Below are a few of the 2 minute gestures.
Anyone can join in the fun. Give it a go, see the facebook page and hashtag it #OneWeek100People2018
That's 22 people sketches. (Let's agree that drawing the same person counts.)

missed you

Well, I've been dabbling in oil and gouache and I gotta say, I've sure missed watercolour. It's been fun experimenting and I've learned loads, but I'll always return to this beautiful, clean, expressive medium. This charming little set up seemed like the perfect arrangement as we near spring! : )

Bella

SOLD$120 - 9x12"original watercolour painting
I've been painting this lovely model for 19 years now. I believe she was the first life model I ever drew. It's always a lovely surprise when she shows up for our session.
Meanwhile, portraits aren't getting easier... just different. Here's a detail -

whisps

$60 - 4x6" original watercolour on 90lb paper with 8x10"mat
One of my favourite models! I painted this at my last life drawing session. It's small, which I think enhances it's lovely delicacy. I seem to enjoy painting small. I prefer paintings to find their way into the nooks and crannies of a home, as opposed to over the couch or mantel. : )

dappled grey

$60 - original 5x7" watercolour painting with 8x10"mat
Grey horses can be born any colour (!) and then their coat lightens as they mature. In fact, they usually end up being white horses. Cool! Of course, this dappled beauty will be grey forever. : )

It's always nice to sit with a cup of tea and catch up on some thinking. Or in my case, some drawing... ; )

a good read

$60 - 5x7"original watercolour painting with 8x10"mat
It was so nice to see someone reading a book at a local cafe this morning. Instead of having their nose in their phone. When I first started drawing I captured people reading all the time. Now, it's a rare treat.
