Nicholas Kryczka, Ph.D.

Dr. Nicholas Kryczka joins the NCE as an Assistant Professor of Secondary Education for Social Studies with two decades of experience in secondary and post-secondary education.  Most recently, Dr. Kryczka was the research coordinator and lead author for the American Historical Association’s nationwide study of secondary US History education.

Dr. Kryczka earned his PhD in history at the University of Chicago, where he also worked as a postdoctoral teaching fellow in the social sciences.  He earned his BA in Political Science at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and his teaching license and MA in History at Northeastern Illinois University.  Dr. Kryczka has developed teacher programming and K-12 history curriculum for the Newberry Library and the Chicago Collections Consortium.  Dr. Kryczka's research has been funded by the National Academy of Education and Spencer Foundation, The Black Metropolis Research Consortium, and the Illinois State Historical Association.  His work has been published in The American Historical Review, History of Education Quarterly, The Journal of the Illinois State Historical Association, and Oxford Bibliographies in Urban Studies.


The career of Dr. Kryczka as a teacher and a historian began in the Chicago Public Schools, where he taught high school social studies for ten years, leading course teams in US History and Sociology.  His book, in-progress and under contract with the University of Chicago Press, interprets the history of school reform in late 20th-century Chicago.

 

Dr. Kryczka is also a Scholar in Residence at the Newberry Library and a Summer Fellow with the Black Metropolis Research Consortium.  A lifelong Chicagoan, Dr. Kryczka is excited to join NCE's mission of preparing Chicagoland's next generation of educators to become the outstanding mentors and teachers that our school communities need.
