Let me show you the right way to do it.  Regardless of what kind of band you use, put it either below or above your knee, depending on what makes you feel your glutes more. Some people like it up here. I feel my glutes more when I have the band down here.  Now, what we’re going to do is make sure we have intra-abdominal pressure so we’re not moving the spine open this way. That’s going to get the glute medius and those oblique fibers of the glutes going.  Come down till we get a good stretch.
