This species has a large melon and a blunt, rounded head and beak lacking. The dorsal fin is short, blunt and triangular. It is located about two thirds of the body along the back. Although it is sometimes called the Irrawaddy River dolphin, really it is not a freshwater dolphin, It is a dolphin of ocean life passing near the coast.
