an empty parking lot with colorful squares painted on it

After the success of my other life size game events (Clue, Candy Land, & Sorry), I decided to try another this past summer. Inspired by fabulous librarian bloggers (Amy, Anna, Anne, Kelly, & Laura), I chose to do Life Size Chutes & Ladders. Setup was easy (not as easy as Sorry, but a lot easier than Clue). My supplies included paper (8.5 x11) in 4 colors, packing tape, masking tape, and yarn. I printed arrows on the paper, taped them down on the carpet. I used masking tape to make the…

a large room with chairs, tables and a chalk drawing on the floor

We played giant chutes and ladders for our combined activity tonight! It was a lot of fun, a little chaotic. Then we had a short wrap up and discussed how the game was like life. And how the game was like the gospel. The kids came up with lots of really great thoughts to share and we got to end on a somewhat spiritual note. I was hoping to do this outside with sidewalk chalk, but it was rainy today.

several children's books on a table next to a red cup and blue ball of yarn

This fabulous idea came from Amy at Show Me Librarian. I followed Amy's program to a tee, but I learned some thing will be helpful if I do this program again, or for a larger crowd. First, go read Amy’s post so that what I’m about to write makes any sense. Like Amy, I had about a dozen participants, but the most I had playing at any one time was about seven. I followed Amy’s tip, and had the kids wear nametags with numbers to make turn-taking easier. Books for checkout, and the numbered name…

a game board with words on it and stairs going up to the top right corner

You’ve heard the old rhyme about sticks and stones, and words not wounding? Not true! Our words do matter; to others, and to God! God really cares about the words that we use and how we use t…

an empty room with several tables and chairs on the floor covered in colored sticky notes

I've seen several blog posts from librarians who have offered life-size Candy Land programs for their preschoolers. As whimsical as these programs looked, I must admit I found the idea of transforming my library's multi-purpose meeting room entirely into Candy Land--then immediately tearing it down before the evening's homeowners association meeting--incredibly daunting. The idea of a life-size game really stuck with me, however, and I put it in my Google doc of back-burner ideas. The…
