How to Bleach Wood: Bleaching will only work on bare wood, so you’ll need to strip and/or sand the wood down to its natural state first. Wear a mask and gloves and work in a well-ventilated area. Eye protection is also helpful Pour bleach in a glass container, dip the rag and wipe it on the wood evenly. Let dry and repeat as necessary. I usually do 3-6 coats for best results. For darker wood species you can also use bleach made specifically for wood. Once the wood is completely dry, wipe on a solution of half vinegar, half water to neutralize the wood before staining. Do not, I repeat, do not mix bleach and vinegar - this creates a toxic gas! Finally give your piece a quick sand since the wood grain will have raised a bit.
