Smooth hydrangeas, bloom on new wood and can be pruned anytime between full dormancy, which is after it’s consistently under 32° at night, all the way through early spring. Mophead hydrangeas bloom on old wood. They produce their buds in late summer early fall. Those buds will then become the next year‘s blooms. If you prune these after late summer, you will be cutting off the next year‘s blooms. Comment “VARIETY” and I’ll send you a reel on how to identify the different Hydrangea varieties. If your mophead hydrangea has gotten out of control, the only safe time to prune is directly after it blooms in the summer, but never
