Postmodernism

Of all movements in art and design history, postmodernism is perhaps the most controversial. This era defies definition; an unstable mix of the theatrical and theoretical, postmodernism was a visually thrilling multifaceted style that ranged from the colourful to the ruinous, the ludicrous to the luxurious.

Starting from the 1970-s, Postmodernism dominated over various spheres of culture. Graphic design was not an exception; it fell under the spell of Postmodernism along with other forms of art.

Simply put, postmodern design is what came after modernist design, the prevailing aesthetic style of the early to mid-20th century. But this broad definition makes it so important to understand what exactly postmodern design is and how to take advantage of its principles with intention.

The world is full of wonder and mystery, we just need to take a look at the stars, the picture-perfect sunsets and the works of art that are produced by the very people that inhabit it, to recognize it.

Modernism refers to the broad movement in Western arts and literature that gathered pace from around 1850, and is characterised by a deliberate rejection of the styles of the past; emphasising instead innovation and experimentation in forms, materials and techniques in order to create artworks that reflected modern society. Modernism in graphic design uses legibility and has more of a minimalistic design to most of its art.

From a Gloucestershire business park to housing schemes in London’s Docklands, Historic England has listed 17 postmodern buildings. Duncan Wilson, its chief executive, said: ‘Postmodern architecture brought fun and colour to our streets. These are scarce survivals of a really influential period of British architecture and these buildings deserve the protection that listing gives them’
