Braiding has been a activity that people did almost 5000 years ago. In Africa braiding your hair was done as a social activity. Women of a tribe would all come together to braid each others hair and talk about things. During the French Renaissance time, people braided their hair to keep it clean and tidy as some people did not always had the opportunity to wash. Aztec women used to braid colourful stips of fabric in their hair and in Egypt braiding was done on wigs the Egyptian royalty wore.
