The Potters Shed • Pottery Classes in Adelaide on Instagram: "As requested, I wanted to show you the way I make closed forms.

It is a very effient technique to make pieces that need a lid.
This way you dont need to throw them in two parts, you can do it all in one.

One very important tip for thos type of shape is to leave some clay at the top to close your form, specially if you decide to make a round shape like that. You will need clay at the top to be able to close it and make the knob.

Its better to have a little bit more clay and take it off then to not have enough!

Happy potting everyone.

A different approach to a closed form, and a fun new thing to try. Anjali | QUIRKY CERAMICS on Instagram: "Tip for closed forms: 👻Even walls with a wooden rib so the cylinder won’t flop while closing 👻 Leave an inch or more at the top of the cylinder to close and to avoid buckling 👻 Use rib to strengthen the walls and collar it while pulling towards inside 👻 Compress the top after closing! I have used Kota porcelain here which is great for this form! It’s a translucent clay great for pumpkins and ghost luminaries! You could find it and more at @claykingceramics Thanks clay king 👑@claykingceramics👑 for sponsoring this post! Lyndsay Meiklem Dean Ⓥ on Instagram: "Making closed forms is my preferred way to begin the initial shape for salt cellars, air plant holders and some vase shapes. It’s a fun technique to add to your skill set !

✴️ Things to Consider when Making Closed Forms

⚪️ starting out with a narrow cylinder shape will be easier to close

⚪️ leave a little thickness in your walls to help accommodate the collaring in and eventual closing of the form

⚪️ begin collaring an inch or more down from the rim of the pot so that you can pinch a knob of clay off the top of the closed balloon shape.

⚪️ you can slightly alter the shape of the form once closed by using the trapped air to press against with your hands or a rib tool.

⚪️ remove the pot from the wheel and don’t forget to add a tiny hole with a Ceramic Videos, Salt Cellars, Balloon Shapes, Vase Shapes, Air Plant Holder, Salt Cellar, Cylinder Shape, Skill Set, Plant Holders
