Stapelia is a genus of low-growing, spineless, stem succulent plants, predominantly from South Africa with a few from other parts of Africa. Several Asian and Latin American species were formerly included but they have all now been transferred to other genera. The flowers of certain species, most notably Stapelia gigantea, can reach 41 cm (16 inches) in diameter when fully open. Most Stapelia flowers are visibly hairy and generate the odour of rotten flesh when they bloom.

The Dragon Fruit is a rare and exotic plant that may look extraterrestrial but is very much a part of our world, and is now even being infused into vodka with All Natural SKYY Infusions® Dragon Fruit. Grown in dry tropical and subtropical climates, this fruit is truly a rare gift of nature. Take a look at some plants that are simply out of this world.

Photo by @FransLanting: Borneo’s rafflesia is the largest flower in the world, with a diameter of up to three feet. The flower smells of rotting meat, attracting the carrion flies that pollinate the bloom before it collapses in a decomposing mass in a matter of one or two days. I found this rafflesia just as it was opening and spent an entire day with it. I placed strobes inside the flower to illuminate a pollinating fly as it descended into the odorous interior.

The Corpse Flower, known for its enormous size, blooms infrequently and releases a foul odor reminiscent of rotting flesh, hence its name. Surprisingly, this unpleasant smell serves a purpose by attracting pollinators such as carrion beetles and flies. Despite its odor, it remains a fascinating wonder of nature!
