Jeff Wall, 'A Ventriloquist at a Birthday Party in October 1947' 1990. There is something quite unsettling about this photograph. Perhaps the children are too well-behaved, too engaged, too focused. In this cosy home with its warm ambient light, weathered upholstery, and fireplace. The placement of figures is meticulous, they are posed but it does not seem contrived. The weight is evenly distributed along the bottom half of the image, balanced by the balloons in the top half.
