Jonathan Crombie suffered a brain hemorrhage, according to DCPA Producing Artistic Director Kent Thompson announced today.

Seventeen-year-old Crombie was never screen-tested for the part of Anne's love interest, Gilbert Blythe, but beat out several other actors, including 90210's Jason Priestley. Megan Follows told Entertainment Weekly her costar kept her laughing after Gilbert lost a spelling competition to Anne: "Jonathan decided Gilbert was the worst speller in the world...he'd do this running joke with a handful of very wilty flowers in his hand...trying to spell what they were."
