In Sanskrit ‘parivrtta’ = ‘to turn around to twist’, and hence when the word ‘parivrtta’ is used before the name of the pose, it would mean the torso twists in either standing, seated, prone, or supine poses. The meaning of ‘parsva’ = ‘side or flank’, and hence ‘parivrtta parsvakonasana’ would mean ‘Revolved Side’, and ‘kona’ = ‘angle’, ‘asana’ = ‘pose or posture’.
