Frequently Asked Questions

I have received a scholarship check in the mail. What is the best way to send it to MSU?

Scholarship checks can be mailed directly to the Office of Financial Aid at:

Office of Financial Aid
Michigan State University
Student Services Building
556 E. Circle Dr., Room 252
East Lansing, MI 48824

Students must include their PID with the check.

If the check is payable to the student or a combination of the student and Michigan State University, the student must endorse the back of the check, or it will not be processed.

Students are to monitor their accounts and billing statements for updates to their balances.

If you are on campus, please bring it to the Spartan One-Stop, located in:

Hannah Administration Building
426 Auditorium Road, Room 140
East Lansing, MI 48824

When will I get my refund?

The university will begin issuing refund checks/deposits on Friday, Aug. 22, for the fall semester. Refunds are sent if the amount of the aid or payments to a student account exceeds their charges. Changes in enrollment can affect the amount of refund a student could receive.

Refund payment schedule:

  • Friday, Aug. 22
  • Tuesday, Aug. 26
  • Thursday, Aug. 28
  • Wednesday, Sept. 3 (resuming weekly Wednesday refunding from this date forward)

Only disbursed funds will be considered in the refund. Pending or anticipated aid will not produce a refund.

I was approved for a private loan, but I don’t see it on my account.

Private loans can take up to 1-2 weeks before they appear on the student’s bill.

I have not received my diploma in the mail.

To receive your diploma, understand that grades had to be reported by Aug. 19 in the summer. The university begins the degree conferral process when it is sent to a third-party company to print the diploma. Once it is shipped, the company sends an email to the student confirming the diploma has been shipped and they should receive it in 7-10 business days; this message also includes the University email address. Depending on the location, diplomas may take longer than the standard shipping time. If your diploma is being mailed overseas, you can expect a longer delivery window.

I have loans, but they are not showing on my bill.

Federal Direct Loan requires the student to accept or take action for the offered loan to disburse. The student must have completed the Direct sub/unsub loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) and complete the Direct Loan entrance counseling; links to both are available in the student’s Financial Aid Portal. Students can accept or decline their loans by logging into the Student Information System and selecting the Financial Aid tile. Once in the Portal, select Financials from the top menu; you will see your award summary with a pencil icon next to your loan offering. Click on the pencil icon and follow the steps until you have reached the Done section.

Advising is available at Spartan One-stop if students need guidance in accepting loans.

Why can't I enroll in a payment plan?

If a student has a past due balance from summer 2025 or prior, the student is not eligible for a fall payment plan.

529 Payments

If the plan is not listed when making a payment online, then the student can request that the plan provider issue a check by mail. This can be mailed to:

Hannah Administration Building
426 Auditorium Road, Room 110
East Lansing, MI 48824

Can I get my hold lifted?

At this time, all summer semester 2025 and prior MUST be paid in full. If the student has a summer balance, we can accept ½ payment to lift the temporary hold until Monday, Aug. 25. At that time, all past-due balances must be paid in full.

When can I drop my classes?

Sept. 18 is the last day to drop with a penalty.

What are the payment plan dates for fall semester 2025?

2025 Payment Plan:

  • Sept. 1: Initial payment due (25% down payment + $40 fee).
  • Oct. 1: Second installment due.
  • Nov. 1: Third installment due.
  • Dec. 1: Fourth and final installment due.
