About UA Online

What is distance learning?

Distance learning is a college education earned online. UA Online offers degree programs and certificates in online and hybrid formats.

Online

You will interact with professors and complete lessons through Blackboard Ultra, a secure web-based learning management system. Blackboard Ultra is an easy-to-use system that allows instructors and students to interact, access assignments and submit coursework.

Blended/Hybrid

Some programs use a combination of online and face-to-face interaction. See each program’s page for information about its course delivery format.

Is a degree earned online the same as one earned on campus?

No matter how you earn it, a degree from The University of Alabama is one and the same! While the student experience is different, all UA programs are held to the same accreditation standards. UA Online students participate in graduation activities alongside main campus students, taking part in the pomp and circumstance of all UA graduates.

Is an online degree right for me?

It can be. Online degrees offer the flexibility to work around your life. If you’re motivated to complete a degree and need the ability to do so off campus, you’re in the right place.

How do I know which degree is right for me?

Your degree is a personal choice, but we can help you better understand your options. Our admissions representatives and UA Online career advisor are available to help you determine the best path forward.

How will I take exams?

There are many ways online courses may require you to take exams. Many courses allow you to take tests from home with certain software on your computer. If proctoring is required, UA Online covers the fees and provides instructions for finding an approved proctor to administer the test.

Admission Requirements and Process

What is required for admission to UA Online?

Admission requirements vary by program and degree level. You can find the individual requirements on the program’s website. For a full list of program websites, please visit our degree listings.

How long do I have to complete a degree program?

If you are pursuing a bachelor’s, you may continue to take classes until you have completed all degree requirements. Master’s and educational specialist degree course requirements must be completed within six years. Depending on the discipline, doctoral degree requirements must be completed within seven to eight years.

How do I transfer credit from another institution to The University of Alabama?

Undergraduate

After you complete the undergraduate admission application, request to have your transcripts sent directly to the Office of the University Registrar from all postsecondary institutions you’ve previously attended. When you have been admitted, those transcripts will be evaluated by your academic division to determine which credits can be applied to UA degree requirements. Graduate

After you complete the graduate admission application, request to have your transcripts sent directly to the Graduate School from all institutions you’ve previously attended (see the Graduate School Admission Requirements and Materials page for more information). Evaluation of transfer credit will not be made until after you have been admitted to the Graduate School. What if I experience technical issues?

Students and instructors can contact the UA Online Technical Support team by emailing techsupport@ua.eduvisiting the online help desk or calling 205-348-6270 at any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Help desk ticket requests are addressed in the order they are received, but you can expect a response within 48 hours.

Tuition/Financial Aid/Scholarships

What is the tuition cost per credit hour for undergraduate and graduate distance degree programs?

What does tuition include?

Tuition for distance students covers the cost of instruction. All distance students are charged the same base tuition rate, regardless of in-state or out-of-state residency. Tuition does not include books, supplies or individual college fees, which may apply to select programs.

What types of financial aid and scholarships are available?

UA Online offers the same access to financial aid as traditional, on-campus students. Students enrolled in any UA Online degree program are eligible to apply for federal financial aid and scholarships with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Additionally, UA Online-specific scholarships and tuition grants are available.
