Delaware Gazette

Delaware Gazette was a newspaper published in Wilmington, Delaware in the 19th century. Its title varied somewhat as it absorbed other publications, and in different editions.

Publication History

The longest-running 19th century Delaware Gazette was founded in 1814, reviving the name of an earlier Wilmington newspaper that had been published from 1785 to 1799 (as well as another short-lived Delaware Gazette published from 1809 to 1810. Delaware Gazette was renamed Delaware Gazette and Peninsula Advertiser later in 1814, but shortened its name to Delaware Gazette again in 1820. It was renamed Delaware Gazette and American Watchman in 1828 after absorbing the Patriot and the American Watchman. It absorbed the Delaware Advertiser and Farmers Journal in 1831, but did not change its name at the time. The title did revert to Delaware Gazette in 1837, though. A daily edition was published from 1872 to 1874 as the Wilmington Daily Gazette, and from 1874 to 1883 as The Daily Gazette. In 1883 the Delaware Gazette merged with the Delaware State Journal to become the Delaware Gazette and State Journal, which published until 1902.
