about

This album is a collection of mostly my own settings of Christmas Carols and songs from before 1920 (and much earlier). In many cases the author is not given in the sources I have used.

Primary sources were:
Beautifully illustrated from earlier manuscripts, 'A Booke of Christmas Carols', by Joseph Cundall published in 1846. Songs from this text include:
- Christo Paremus Canticam
- Boar's Head Carol
- The Star Song
- Hail! Ever Hail

'Ancient English Christmas Carols' by Edith Rickert, 1910:
- As Dew in April

'Christmas Carols New and Old' published by Henry Bramley in 1850:
- The Holy Well
- Dives and Lazarus

Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern, published by John Hotten in 1901:
- Hark! All Around the Welkin Rings
- The Seven Virgins
- Last Night as I Lay Sleeping (Sung to Bony Irish Boy/Spancil Hill)

88 Favourite Carols and Hymns for Christmas, by William Walker & Songs, published in 1830:
- Brightest and Best (written by Richard Heber)

The House of Christmas is my setting of a poem by G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936).

All of the books listed above are available at archive.org.
