Abstract

A wireless information device (eg a mobile phone) is programmed with client software including a first application (Battleships) which communicates using datagrams with a second application in accordance with a bearer/Channel protocol interface (Infrared/SMS), in which the device comprises a software server (GSDP, GDP) to mediate the communication between the first application and the second application and to control the selection of the appropriate bearer protocol interface from several such bearer protocol interfaces. The bearer is treated as connectionless and unreliable/best effort, and a server interface to the client software is session-based but unreliable, and is independent of the bearer. A further protocol layer RGCP may be included to provide reliable communication.
