Six Degrees of Separation – from We Have Always Lived in the Castle to Summer of Fear

It’s time for #6degrees, inspired by Kate at Books Are My Favourite and Best. We all start at the same place as other readers, add six books, and see where it ends up. This month’s starting point is We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. I guess it is a good Halloween tie-in because it is certainly creepy but I used it once before. One of the characters is a Constance, which tempted me, but for my link I am going with the author’s name.

The Surgeon by Tess Gerritsen

I have enjoyed Tess Gerritsen’s current series, The Martini Club, about retired CIA agents trying to escape their pasts in Maine, so decided to go hear her speak recently at a local library. A former physician, she is best known for her medical thrillers – her books have sold more than 40 million copies worldwide – including the Rizzoli & Isles books that became a hit TV show.

April 2025 Reading

This post is much later than usual because of my trip to England, Belgium, and the Netherlands! I didn’t get much reading done once I got off the plane at Heathrow, but I did manage to acquire several books, which I will share later.

My favorite books in April were The Wedding People by Alison Espach and Wild Dark Shore, a haunting, angst-filled story set in an exotic location.  Whether or not you liked it, it was the sort of book that captures your attention even after you finish reading it. I also enjoyed The Far Country by Nevil Shute.

The Summer Guests by Tess Gerritsen

In The Spy Coast, one of my favorite books of 2025 to date, Gerritsen introduced an appealing group of retirees, led by former spy, Maggie Bird. After years of restless traveling, trying to escape painful memories, Maggie wound up in Purity, Maine, where she had several friends from her CIA days. 

February 2025 Reading

Historical Fiction

Slow Bomb at Dimperley by Lissa Evans (2024). A soldier returning to his ancestral home after WWII finds new responsibilities and little in the way of practical help from his family as he copes with death duties and ennui in this amusing story. My review.

The Spy Coast by Tess Gerritsen

Maggie Bird is retired and living a quiet life in Purity, Maine with a few chickens and a small group of friends nearby when she gets an unexpected and unwelcome visitor. A woman who calls herself Bianca wants Maggie’s help finding a colleague called Diana from her CIA past, last seen in Bangkok.
