A study led by G. Waddington on ankle sprains and mobility proved that modern footwear makes it increasingly easy to injure our ankles. His research showed that: The ability to detect inversion moments (the ankle rolling or starting to roll) was much faster when barefoot vs. when in shoes. Detection of ankle inversion was also faster when using a textured footbed (that stimulated the nerves on the bottom of the foot) compared to just wearing shoes. The conclusion was that skin stretch texture and pressure are all picked up from the ground (through nerves in the sole of the foot) and tell the foot and ankle where it is in space. When wearing shoes this sensory information is not picked up and we have to rely on other mechanisms to detect ankle movement (the stretch of muscles tendons and ligaments) which are much slower and may only kick in when it is too late to prevent the sprain from happening. Bottom line: ditch the shoes Wisdom from @thefootcollective . . . . #shoes #footwear #anklesprain #ankle #anklebreaker #injury #injuryfree #injuryprevention #sports #athletes #footcare #barefoot #barefoottraining #running #physicaltherapy #healthyfeet #balance #reactiontime #tfc #ankleinjury #rehab #mobility #nerves #foothealth #strongfeet #earthrunners #barefootsandals Lisfranc Injury, Ankle Ligaments, Ankle Fracture, Twisted Ankle, Ankle Stretches, Ankle Pain, Ankle Injury, Sprained Ankle, Uric Acid

Hello there! As I prepared for my own surgery this past week, I found it helpful to read blogs others had written about their own experiences. I figured I would pay it forward by recording my own, and hoping that it will help others who are experiencing similar foot and ankle problems. I am a 34 year old music teacher in rural PA. Last fall, I began experiencing dull aches and pains in my right foot- something not completely out of the ordinary, as I have had completely flat feet my entire…
