Giant Japanese spider Crab

Many species such as the Tapanuli orangutan, the Micro Chameleon and the Olinguito were discovered. Interestingly, species that went extinct millions of years ago were also discovered during the last decade. However, most of these newly discovered species are all under severe threat.

The largest crab on earth lives up to 1,000ft below sea level, and can measure up to 12ft from claw tip to claw tip. Why they are terrifying: Have you ever been nipped by a normal-sized crab? It hurts. A giant crab would probably nip your toe off.

Although we call them "crab spiders" in Hawaii, this is actually the spinybacked orbweaver....and it can be a real nuisance this time of year, string hundreds of webs from the eves...

This is one HUGE crab!

And the winner of the largest known crab species goes to the Japanese spider crab, aka aka-ashi-gani (tall legs crab). These giants can be found off the coast of Japan near deep water vents. They can be found at depths of up to 1,970 feet. Their preferred temperature is around 50°F. Japanese spider crabs are not currently evaluated by the IUCN.
