First, Clifford our Magnolia macrophylla. After last year’s exciting first bloom I really thought this was the year that the entire tree would be covered in flowers. Not the case. Just this one lonely bud. At least this year its right over the pathway to the patio, so it’s well positioned for maximum enjoyment. With all the rain we’ve been enduring here in Portland I can also attest to the umbrella like qualities of this trees 18” long leaves. If caught in a downpour there are worse places…

When we moved in, we planted magnolias around our back patio, only to have them destroyed by the deer within two weeks. 🫠 I knew we would unfortunately need to replace the  trees. 

I have always loved dogwoods, but only recently became familiar with this variety. It’s a cross between the Pacific dogwood’s large creamy white flowers and the Chinese dogwood’s environmental tolerance. It is fast-growing, and will grow about 1’ per year. Developed at Rutger’s, it was given a patent in 2006. 

The Venus dogwood grows best in full sun to part shade and well-drained, organically rich soil. It can be a good choice for lawns, Venus Dogwood, Lauren Syrowik, Pacific Dogwood, Woodland Garden, Back Patio, Fast Growing, The Pacific, Creamy White, A Month
