Kaylee B. on Instagram: "Here’s why I love partial sums 👇 1️⃣ It helps students follow place value concepts. Students add the hundreds, then the tens, and then the ones. They also line up their answers according to place value. 2️⃣ once their numbers are lined up, students can add going straight down. This often gives them easy math fact equations to work with. Students love this! 3️⃣ it’s another tool in my students’ tool belt. Students can make a choice to use this strategy or another strategy they have learned to add 3-digit numbers. Being able to choose is great! For students to be successful with the partial sums strategy, they do need direct instruction and quality practice activities that give them support along the way. Kaylee B. on Instagram: "Here are 3 patterns I want my students to know before I teach them the break apart addition strategy: 1️⃣ Adding numbers like 20+30, where there is a 0 in the ones place. 2️⃣ Adding numbers like 50+6 where they are adding a 2-digit number ending in 0 and a single digit number together. 3️⃣ Adding numbers like 30+16, where they are adding a 2-digit number ending in 0 and a number between 10-20. To help students see these patterns, I’ll list up a bunch of these problems and we solve them together either using a hundreds chart or base ten blocks. Soon students can see the patterns and can use mental math. These mental math skills are key for finding success with the break apart addition strategy. 🙌 I have a blog post sharing more about how to best teach this 2-d Adding 2 Digit Numbers Anchor Chart, Adding 2 Digit Numbers, Addition Of 3 Digit Numbers, Adding And Subtracting Two Digit Numbers, 2digit Addition, Adding Numbers, Decomposing Numbers, Addition Strategies, Number Bond

Since the first day of school, we have been working hard to grow and strengthen number sense in our firsties. It is not an easy task. But I really enjoy the challenge. My teammate, Jess, and I are constantly looking for new ways to encourage flexibility with numbers. Because math did not make a lot of sense to me growing up, I tend to think about many of skills from a basic very basic level. Once I have that foundation, then I build up the skills from there. So as I was trying to think about…
