Since around A.D. 1000, compasses have helped sailors find their way around the oceans. In modern times, more sophisticated equipment is also used. The compass needle always points either north or south. It points in the direction of one of Earth’s two magnetic poles. On long ocean voyages in the past, a compass would become useless without a piece of lodestone. Lodestone is naturally magnetic. | Rocks for Tools and Tombs | Kids Discover Compass Needle, Magnetic Compass, Ocean Tattoos, The Compass, A Compass, Kids Discover, Modern Times, Earth Science, Science For Kids

Avery's compass was a trinket she bought during high school in Alaska; she bought it the same time her younger sister Abigail bought a pocket watch of similar design. Before Avery left for Reed College, Abigail and Amber, with the help of their dad, worked at his watch shop to turn the compass into a watch (with the compass needle as a seconds hand). In other peoples' dreams, it acts like a compass; in reality, it can be used to accurately measure seconds, though it can't tell time.
