Improv Curve Quilt | Circle quilt patterns, Modern quilting designs, Circle quilts

My improv pieced curve quilt is finished. In my bid to practice sewing pieced curves, I got out a bunch of 5" squares that I had left over from a previous project and took to them with my rotary cutter. It was a little scary at the beginning, but I'm so glad that I made it... and finished it. I learned a lot about curved piecing along the way - the right ways of doing it, and the wrong. After watching a bunch of YouTube videos, it seems that I sewed my curves together the 'wrong' way. I had…

Dorky Homemade Quilts | Crazy quilts, Art quilts, Colorful quilts

"Box Jellies" made by Lisa Boyer, pattern designed by Marsha at Threadbender, 2008 This quilt was such a pleasure to make. What a fabulous pattern, Marsha! I love it. Thank you for making it available on your website, and thank you for your fabulous tutorial. The only modification I made to Marsha's pattern was to leave off one row at the bottom, due to size/hanging considerations. Some detail: The quilt just glows, doesn't it? For drama, nothing beats batiks on black. I'm not crazy about…

Grace and Peace Quilting: Scandinavian Fish in 2025 | Fish quilt pattern, Fish quilt, Barn quilt

My latest personal finish!!! It's a pattern from the latest Modern Patchwork magazine--July/August, 2017. (Llama sticky bookmark is from Daiso Japan/USA.) Their version is a pillow called "Red Herring Pillow", inspired by Scandinavian graphics. I used a variegated blue fabric, and cut my fish out from different parts of the same piece of fabric. This was arrangement #1, And arrangement #2. Number 1 got the most votes from my screened audience. The quilting is matchstick quilting on my…

Line Study #2 - "Sketching" | Quilt inspiration, Herringbone quilt, Modern quilts

I have been working on Line Study #1 and wanted a break. So I started on a quick "sketch" for the next line study. I'm not 100% sold on this, but it's the right direction. Oh, and I am really enjoying the improvisational aspects to quilting... I am trying my hardest not to use a straight edge and have yet to use a pattern or pattern pieces, which all feels more natural to me.

The Patchery Menagerie: Student Bird Quilt #1

I've decided to break up the student birds into two quilts. This way the quilts will be able to fit to hang in smaller spaces for display, and it when I teach a class, there will be two quilts in the room instead of just one. Putting disparate blocks together is tricky. It's adding fabrics to one side or another, trimming the blocks so the edges are straight and square, inserting the occasional set-in square and basically winging it. Here is the top third of the quilt in process. Here I have…
