When I saw this quote, I was reminded of the starfish story about the man tossing starfish back into the ocean. When asked by a passer-by what difference it would make considering the hundreds that had washed up onshore, he responded, "it made a difference to that one" as he tossed it back. What kind of difference are you making through your business?

The original story is called The Star Thrower, by Loren Eiseley. This story is a perfect narration for what inspires me every day to make a difference in the world around me. There is no such thing as too small of a difference. Never trivialize the impact that you can make.

I remember hearing that lovely story of the little boy throwing the starfish back into the water. He was on a beech cluttered with starfish that had been washed up and were dying. Instead of becoming overwhelmed with such a huge task of trying to save all of them, he saw value in the small act of helping each starfish, one by one. His answer when challenged about the futility of his effort was ‘well it made a difference to that starfish’. This often reminds me to just stay focused on helping

One morning, an elderly man was walking along the beach when he noticed a young boy picking something off the sand and throwing it into the sea. As he got closer, the man realized the child was throwing stranded starfishes that had washed up on the shore back into the breaking waves. Approaching the boy, the man asked what he was doing. “The starfish will die if they’re still on the shore when the sun rises,” he replied.

A man spotted a girl throwing beached starfish back into the ocean. He said, “Do you not realize that there are miles of beach and starfish all along it? You cannot possibly make a difference." The girl listened, then bent down to pick up another starfish, and threw it into the ocean.
