Having launched the kite (Sutton 30) at the eastern end of Salt Pond E8X, I walked the levee westward to the outflow of Salt Pond E9. This route placed Salt Pond E14, a dry pond bottom managed as Snowy Plover habitat on my right, while the tidal ponds, E8X and E9, were on my left. Toward the end of the walk, the Mt. Eden Creek mudflat and marsh replaced E14 on the right. Of interest in this set of photographs is how the E8X and E9 pond bottoms are accumulating sediment and vegetation. It is…

There are some places on this magical planet that leave your jaw on the ground, whilst you drag it along like an old car dragging a broken bumper. The Maras Salt Ponds, located in the ancient Inca Sacred Valley (we are happy to say), is one of such places. Over the past two and a half years, we have traveled to 41 countries, and we’ve been fortunate enough to pick up our jaws off the floor, at least a few times.

Photographer David Burdeny, whose photo of a towering iceberg we featured last month, has been working on another large-scale photography project. Burdeny began the series SALT: Fields, Plottings and Extracts in 2015, using aerial photography to explore some of the world’s most vibrant salterns in Utah, Mexico, and Australia.
