Gropius and the Architects Collaborative, the firm Walter Gropius founded in 1954 after immigrating to the U.S., received a commission from the government to build a new federal building in Boston in 1961. The modern structure, which is made up of two 26-story towers and a four-story building, was completed in 1966 and dedicated in honor of President John F. Kennedy.

Walter Gropius (1883-1969). Studied at the Colleges of Technology of Berlin and Munich. Worked under the german architect Peter Behrens from 1907-10. He was influenced by the writings of Frank Lloyd Wright. Founded the Bauhaus (House of Building), one of the most influential architecture and design schools of the 20th century.
