How to play the Rummy game: Rummy rules and guide to play Rummy

Rummy is a card game that is played with two decks of cards with a total of two a wild cards. To win the rummy game, a player must make a valid statement by choosing and discarding cards from the two given piles. A stack is a closed deck, where one player cannot see the card he is choosing, while the other is an open deck formed by the cards discarded by the players. To win in the rummy card game, players must group the cards into valid sequences and sets.

In rummy, the cards of each suit are ranked from lowest to highest starting with Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, and King. Ace, Jack, Queen and King have 10 points each. The remaining cards have a value equal to their nominal value. For example, 4 cards will have 4 points and so on.

What Are Rummy Game Rules?

The rules of a 13 card rummy game are simple: you must organize all the cards in your hand to form at least two sequences, of which one must be a pure sequence. The remaining cards must be organized invalid sequences and/or sets. Follow the step-by-step instructions to learn rummy rules for how to play the Indian Rummy card game:

Rummy rules

How to form sequences?

In the rummy game, a sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. There are two types of sequences that are formed; a pure sequence and an impure sequence. To win the rummy game you need at least one pure sequence in your rummy hand.

Pure sequence

A pure sequence is a group of cards. In that group keep three or more cards of the same suit, placed in consecutive order. To form a pure sequence in the 13 card rummy game, a player cannot use any wild card or joker card.

Here are some examples of pure sequence.

1. 2 3 4 ( Three cards there is no wild card or joker card - Pure sequence)

2. 2 3 4 5 ( Four cards there is no wild card or joker card - Pure sequence)

Impure sequence

An impure sequence is a group of three or more cards of the same suit with one or more Joker cards used.

Here are some examples of impure sequence.

1. 4 5 Q 7 ( Here Q has been used as a wild Joker card replacing 6 to form an impure sequence).

2. 4 Q 6 7 PJ ((Here Q as wild joker that is replacing 5 and the Printed Joker is replacing 8 .)

How to form sets?

A set is a group of three or more cards of the same value but of different suits. When you are forming sets, you can use wild cards and wild cards.

Here are some examples of sets.

1. A ♠ A ♣A♥ ( Valid Set - In this set, all the Ace are different suits)

2. 4♠4♥4♣4♦ ( In this set Rummy set is formed with four 4 cards of different suits)

3. 5♥Q♠5♠5♣ ( In this set Q♠ has been used as wild joker card replacing 5♣ to form set)

4. 9♦9♣9♠PJ ( In this set Printed joker replacing 9♥ to make set)

5. 9♦9♣Q♠PJ ( In this set Q♠ has been used as wild joker replacing the 9♠ & printed joker replacing 9♥)

6. 9♦9♣PJQ♥Q♠ ( this is a set of 5 cards with printed joker & Q♥ as wild joker card replacing 9♥9♠ 7 one more wild joker card Q♠ to complete 13 cards grouping & make a valid declaration...)

Note: The set is formed with the same card of different suits. However, you cannot use two or more cards of the same suit. This is taken as an invalid statement. Also, keep in mind that a set can have more than four cards. So, if you have a set of four cards and you are using an additional Joker, then in total it becomes a group of 5 cards and is still a valid set. At no time, the hand can have more than 13 cards.

Here are some examples of Invalid Set
  • Q♥Q♥Q♣ ( it is invalid because of two Qs of the same suit ♥)
  • 5♠5♥5♣5♠Q♥ ( There are two 5 spades of the same suit. The wild card Q♥ as the fifth card but having two 5♠ is making invalid.)

How to play the Rummy Game?

Follow these simple rules and instructions to know how to play the game from start to finish:
  • The Rummy card game is played between 2 to 6 players with 2 decks of cards. Each player receives 13 cards and a random card is selected as the wild card or wild card of the game.
  • The player has to draw and discard cards to form valid sets and sequences of the 13 cards in the hand, where the player can also use wild card or printed wild card from the deck to create impure sequences and sets.
  • According to the Indian rummy rules, once a player organized 13 cards in 2 valid sequences, including 1 pure sequence and more groups (sequences or sets), one can make a statement and win the rummy game.

Quick tips to win the Rummy card game

Just as it is important to know the rummy rules, it is also necessary to play with care and concentration. Here are quick tips to win the rummy game and stay one step ahead of your competitors.

  • At the beginning of the game form the pure sequence. Without a pure sequence, a player cannot make a statement.
  • Discard cards with high points such as Ace, Jack, Queen and King. Replace these cards with joker card or wild cards. Reduce a load of points, in case you lose the game. As much as possible, avoid choosing from the discard pile. It shows you which hand you are trying to form.
  • Look for smart cards. For example, a 6 of any suit can work with 4 and 5 of the same suit and also 7 and 8 of the same suit.
  • Joker cards play an important role in the rummy. Try using them to replace high-value cards. Remember, the joker card and wild cards cannot be used to form a pure sequence.
  • When you are ready to make a statement, verify and recheck your cards and then press the button. An invalid declaration can even turn a winning game into a complete loss.

Common terms used in rummy rules

Here are some common Indian Rummy card game terms that every player needs to know before they start Playing Rummy.

What is a rummy table?

It is the table where the rummy card game is played. Each rummy table can accommodate two to six players for each game.

In each rummy deck, there is a printed Joker and there is a wild card that is randomly selected at the beginning of the game. The role of these two types of card is the same. Wild cards are used to form impure sets and sequences. A Joker card can replace the desired number when forming groups. This is a valid training in a an Indian rummy card game.

What is drawing and discarding?

In all Rummy games, each player receives 13 cards. In addition, there are 2 stacks from which each player can select cards, thus stealing a card. Once a player draws a card, he has to get rid of a card, this is called discard.

What is card classification?

The classification of the cards is done at the beginning of the game. This is done to organize your cards to help you with your sets and sequences, reducing the probability of mixing the cards. Once the cards are displayed, you can press the Sort button and start playing.

What is a drop?

When a player decides to leave the game table at the beginning or in the middle of the rummy game, it is a fall. The act is removed from the game as a personal decision. The first fall = 20 points; Average drop = 40 points and last drop and maximum point loss are Rs.80 points.

In the case of Pool rummy, if a player falls in 101 pool, the score is 20. In the case of 201 pool rummy, the fall score is 25. In a game, where the best of 2 and the best is played of 3, then a fall is not allowed.

What are cash tournaments?

Go to 'Tournaments' in the top navigation panel. Now, select the type of tournament you want to play. In the corresponding tournament list, click on any of the open tournaments you wish to join. Finally, click on the flashing button Join this tournament in Tournament Details.

What is an invalid statement?

An invalid declaration occurs in the rummy card game when the player presses the Declaration button, but the cards are not invalid sequences and sets. Therefore, the player will lose the game and the competitor will be automatically declared as the winner.

Here are some examples of common invalid statements that players make while playing rummy:

Examples of the Wrong Declaration with Invalid Sets

Example 1: 9♠ 9♠ 9♦ 9♣ 9♥

A set may have 3 or more cards, however, a set must be formed with cards of the same value and different suits. In this situation, the Wild Joker card (Queen of Hearts) was added and became the fifth card, which is valid according to the rules, however, the group consists of 2 cards of the same suit, so it is an incorrect statement .

Example 2: J♥ J♥ J♦

In this set, there are 3 cards that are within the minimum limit. In addition, a set consists of cards of the same nominal value but has to be of different suits. The set cannot have more than one card of the same suit. In this example, the set consists of two cards of the same suit and that make it an incorrect statement.

Examples of Wrong Declaration with Invalid Sequences Examples

Example 1: 4♠ 4♥ 4♦ 4♣ | 7♠ 7♥ 7♦ | 5♠ 5♥ 5♣ | 8♥ 8♦ Joker

A valid declaration requires 2 sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence, that is, a sequence without a wild card and the other can be a pure or impure sequence, that is, a sequence with or without a wild card. However, in the given example there is no sequence made, so it is an invalid statement.

Example 2: J♥ J♠ J♦ | 7♥ 8♥ Joker | 9♠ 10♠ K♠ Joker | 4♠ 4♥ 4♦

A valid declaration must have 2 sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence, that is, a sequence without a wild card and the other can be a pure or impure sequence, that is, a sequence with or without a wild card. This example shows that there are 2 sequences, but both are impure sequences, that is, wildcard sequence and the pure sequence is not there. It is mandatory to have a pure sequence before making a statement.

Example 3: K♥ K♠ K♦ | 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ 8♥ | 4♠ 4♥ 4♦ | 9♠ 9♥ 9♦

The sequences are very important for a rummy card game and you need a minimum of 2 sequences, of which one must be pure sequence and the other can be pure or impure sequence to win the game. In this example, there is a pure sequence, however, the second sequence is missing and, therefore, is an invalid statement.

Winning cash = (Sum of all opponents points) X (Rupee value of the point) - SilkRummy Rate

Example:

Each point has a default value of Rs. 4. There will be 1 player who will be the winner and the remaining 5 will lose the game. The losing points of the remaining 5 players would be 45, 78, 23, 20, 40 respectively. Winnings will be calculated as:

The winner of rummy for groups is calculated according to the given calculation:

Winnings = (Entrance fee) X (Number of players) - SilkRummy rates

The winner will earn Rs. 50 x 5 = Rs. 250

This amount will be credited to the winner's account after the deduction of the SilkRummy fees.

Calculation of earnings on Deals Rummy ?

In rummy offers, the winner wins all the chips at the end of each offer. This is how earnings are calculated:

Winnings = Sum of points of all opponents assuming that each chip is equal to one point.

Example:

Suppose there are 6 players at the table and player 5 declares his hand. The other four players will lose with 10, 20, 30, 35 and 40 points respectively. The winner's chips will be calculated as 10 + 20 + 30 + 35 + 40 = 135 chips.
