Krampus, the mythical Christmas demon, is a chilling figure rooted in Central European folklore. With his twisted horns, sharp claws, and fiery eyes, he serves as the ominous counterpart to Saint Nicholas, tasked with punishing the wicked. While Saint Nicholas rewards virtuous children with gifts, Krampus roams the snowy villages, rattling chains and wielding his birch rods to terrify those who have misbehaved. Sometimes depicted carrying a sack or basket, he is said to drag the worst offenders to his lair for a more severe reckoning. Celebrated during Krampusnacht on December 5th, this dark and eerie tradition has endured for centuries, blending the macabre with the merriment of the holiday season, a reminder that Christmas holds both light and shadow.
