Interesting facts about Pskov State University

The leading university of the region, the winner of the programs “Priority 2030” and “Advanced Engineering Schools” of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, the initiator of large-scale youth projects in the region, the country and internationally - Pskov State University was founded by merging five educational institutions in 2011, but its history began long before that: back in 1932, when a pedagogical institute was founded in Pskov region. There was no university in pre-revolutionary Pskov, but the province opened two educational institutions that trained pedagogical staff.

Tartu to Pskov

It turns out that in 1918, during the days of the German occupation of Pskov, the University of Yuryev, now known to everyone as the University of Tartu, was planned to be transferred to our city. At least, such a proposal was seriously considered at a meeting of the Pskov City Duma.

At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War the Pedagogical Institute was evacuated to the city of Kirov and temporarily stopped its work. Many students volunteered to go to the front.

In 1963, the Faculty of Foreign Languages appeared at the Pedagogical Institute, and one of the first teachers of this faculty was Nadezhda Mandelstam, the widow of the famous poet.

In 2016, Anatoly Lukin Street appeared in Pskov. It is located in the area of Pozhigovskaya Street and is named in memory of an amazing man - a Soviet engineer, founder and creator of the Pskov Heavy Electrical Welding Equipment Plant (TESO).
