It was produced by Tony Thomas, and Paul Junger Witt, and directed by Paul Krasny. The format of the show was multi-camera sitcom, and was filmed before a live studio audience at CBS Television City. The original cast members included; Mark Margolis, Patti D'Arbanville, Toni Kalem, Alan Rosenberrg, Levar Burton and Robert Firth. Firth portrays Alfie, a gay boxer and bartender, who is also the son of Rita, the local bar and restaurant owner, played by Lanie Kazan. Both Benson and Kazan would go on to reprise their roles in the reboot - Lanie Kazan as Rita, and Robbie Benson as Detective Cliff Brady. Robert Pastorelli also appears briefly as a recurring character, not a series regular. The original soundtrack for the opener was "Show Some Respect," performed by Tina Turner, from her fifth solo album "Private Dancer," which she recorded for Capitol in 1983.
