Increased height for a better reading experience

I’m a bit late at the party writing about the Jetbrains font. It’s a well thought-out font that has everything you’d expect in this day and age: lot’s of language support, distinct characters all around, true italics for all weights, and ligatures.

The main theme here though, is touched on by that little quote at the top: whether you like this font or not seems to be completely determined by how much you like the x-height. It ensures readability and smooth rendering at small sizes. For some though, the lower case characters are now so close in size to the uppercase ones that it actually hurts readability. YMMV.

A playfully quirky monospace grotesque font, that’s sober enough to be used everyday in your code editor.

Lot’s of quirk in this font. Which, at tiny sizes, doesn’t distract too much but gives it a bit of character. Apparently it was the designer’s first font, originally designed from scratch in a manner of weeks. An accomplishment in and of itself. No true italics though, but a decent number of glyphs. All licences are perpetual, and at only €20 per weight totally affordable.

A tribute to the utilitarian beauty of terminals and typewriters, Cartograph excels in code and prose.

Cartograph is a wonderfully readable monospace font and works as well for documents as it does for code. The italics are really different and almost cursive. It has everything: over 850 glyphs covering Greek, Cyrillic and more, true italics in all (8!!) weights and a set of ligatures. It is commercial though, but at $40 per license, which includes future updates, it’s not too bad. Font creators need to eat too.

One thing that bothered me, though, is that they turned the zero into a 1980s-style “slashed circle”. Unhip, daddy-o!

Mensch is designed as an improvement on Menlo (which was an improvement on DejaVu Mono, which built upon Bitstream Vera Sans Mono… that’s a deep history there), but with “about a dozen changes”. Is it better? Well at least one guy thinks so, so why not. It’s open source. Being a DejaVu Mono derivative means only one weight, but lot’s of glyphs and it’s simple, elegant and reliable.

Sometype Mono is a free monospaced font family for coding and tabular layout which can be used for commercial purpose for free.

The creators didn’t see the need to spend a lot of words on it, so neither will I. The thing explains itself. What can I say, it’s just really nice and different but not weird. I particularly like the clean and rounded shapes, and it comes in 3 weights with true italics. Awesome.

Bront has lightly tweaked variations on DejaVu Sans Mono and Ubuntu Mono. The README on GitHub makes the changes very clear. Neither original font was particularly geared towards programming, and they do benefit from things like aligned symbols. Open source fonts are a beautiful thing.

Airbus set out to design a new typeface for cockpits and one of the results is this wonderful monospace font. It has the full set of 4 styles and it is designed specifically for readability. A slashed zero has been designed but sadly it’s not yet available via open type features. While that hurts its usefulness for coding, it’s still too cool to be able to use the real Airbus cockpit typeface.

Cascadia is Microsoft’s newest font. It has ligatures, loads of character support. And it has a lot of character itself, it’s actually a bit quirky. Just one weight and no italics though. Microsoft is hip now, so there is a blog post and the source code is hosted on GitHub.

Bedstead includes a load of teletext character designs from several systems, including Cyrillic and Hebrew alphabets. If you want the real teletext look, use the Extended variant. Maybe it’s more creative and nostalgic than practical, but it’s such a cool look.

It was drawn from scratch as a pet project / experiment because there just wasn’t any free or paid font that I found both readable, effective and elegant.

Really thin and narrow! There are a bunch of different weights, but it’s pretty subtle and even the bold is thinner than what most would consider regular. The semi-connected cursive italics really make it stand out. Character support it pretty good. And it has all the hip ligatures.

With the new year surprisingly also comes a vector graphics variant of the venerable Proggy font. You can also op for dotted zeros or crossed sevens and zeds, and a lot of attention is payed to the way operators and braces line up with text. No bold or italic variants, but otherwise it’s everything you’d want for in a programming font.

Although in intention simple and systematic, Agave has lots of quirky character. Distinct, readable and well aligned characters round out a font that should cover all characters in most code use cases if not all languages of the world. The capital Q is particularly cool. Sadly, like a lot of alternatives, it doesn’t offer true bold and italic.

This is not just a cool looking font. The typical shapes of OpenDyslexic attempt to help with problems people with dyslexia face every day, like letter confusion or rotation, and crowding. There are a bunch of styles for the proportional version, and this monospace version. But sadly no real bold or italic for the monospace font. Of course, it’s super legible and the glyphs are easily distinguished.
